FAQ's

Q: Is there a fee to consult me on what trees would be best for my property?

A: We are always happy to visit with you on the phone about recommended trees for your property.   Please keep in mind that we are Foresters, not Landscapers.  So while we are quite familiar with our native tree species, a Landscaper or Arborist may have more knowledge of "cultivars" of these species or non-native species that would work well for your yard.

Q: Are there any government programs that would help pay for the cost of planting trees?

A: Yes.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has a Landowners Assistance program that many can take advantage. Click 'Cost-Share Programs ' to view.  This will give you several options depending on current land use and long term goals for you property.

Q: I’d like to do some timber stand improvement work (TSI) on my property – do I have to bear the fu

A: Not necessarily. Give us a call and we can work through that with you. Often times cost sharing is available for those types of activities.

Q: Why is it important to work with a consulting forester when doing a timber sale?

A: You can work directly with the logging company, but you may not get the best price for your timber! Also, it pays to have someone managing not only the sale, but the harvest to help protect your property from damage by the logging process.

Q: I own wooded property. What would be the advantages of being in the Forest Reserve program?

A: The Forest Reserve Program in Iowa allows timber ground that is a minimum of 2 acres in size, has 200 or more trees per acre and does not have livestock on it to be property tax exempt.  This was program was established to encourage proper stewardship and protection of our woodlands in Iowa.

Q: What does a forest management plan look like?

A: We go over your goals prior to doing the plan and then the plan has action items that will help you achieve your goals. Those action items can be as detailed as you would like, so that you can take them on yourself, or contract with others to do them.
